2024 General Election

A General Election is taking place on Thursday 4th July 2024. This is an opportunity for people in every part of the UK to choose their MP. This person will represent a local area (constituency) in the House of Commons for up to five years.

Register to Vote

In order to vote in this General Election you need to register, if you haven’t already. To register please visit https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Voter registration is open until 11.59pm on 18th June 2024.

You can also register to vote anonymously.

Voter ID

Voters are now legally required to show photo ID when voting at a polling station at UK Parliament general elections.

People who do not have an accepted form of voter ID (i.e., one of those listed below) can
apply for a free voter ID document known as a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline to
apply for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

Accepted forms of voter ID are, as listed by the Electoral Commission:

  • Passport issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a British
    Overseas Territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country (including an Irish
    Passport Card)
  • Driving licence issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or an
    EEA state
  • A Blue Badge
  • Scottish National Entitlement Card issued for the purpose of concessionary travel
    (including a 60+, disabled or under 22s bus pass)
  • Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card), for
    example a Young Scot card
  • Biometric immigration document
  • Defence Identity Card
  • National identity card issued by an EEA state
  • Voter Authority Certificate
  • Anonymous Elector’s Document.
